Arts-based evaluation methods
Arts-based research and evaluation methods offer transformative benefits, enabling deeper engagement and inclusivity. These approaches provide participants with alternative ways to communicate ideas, express emotions, and share experiences that might be difficult or uncomfortable to articulate verbally. By incorporating diverse forms of expression, such as visual art, photography and participatory video, these methods create space for reflection, storytelling, and connection, fostering richer and more authentic insights.
I have extensive experience utilizing arts-based methods in my work, including formal training in participatory video through InsightShare and in arts-based research methods at La Ventana Infinita. Additionally, I have applied creative tools such as collage, painting, photography, and body mapping to facilitate inclusive and participatory processes. These methods are particularly effective in engaging marginalized groups and ensuring that all voices are heard in research and evaluation.
My work has also included collaborations with organizations that use art to drive social change. I’ve supported youth education initiatives that employ artistic expression, street theater projects advocating for the inclusion of migrants and refugees, cultural centers promoting equitable access to creativity, and drama therapy programs in prisons and mental health institutions. My training in music therapy has further enriched my perspective on the healing and transformative potential of art, although I am not a licensed therapist.
As a vocalist and pottery artist, I deeply believe in the power of art to heal, connect people, and amplify voices that might otherwise go unheard.
